OBALENDE, LAGOS STATE – In a rare show of alumni dedication, the immediate past chairman of Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA, Mr. Fuad Atanda-Lawal, has commenced the comprehensive reconstruction of the Army Children’s School and Dodan Barracks Primary School.
The project, executed through the Fuad Atanda-Lawal Foundation, was flagged off on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, marking a personal return for the former chairman to his alma mater.
Reflecting on his time as a pupil 38 years ago, Atanda-Lawal emphasized that providing a conducive learning environment is a moral imperative to prevent future social burdens.
A central vision of the reconstruction project is to elevate the quality of public school infrastructure to a level that competes with costly private institutions.
Atanda-Lawal noted that high-quality, free education is the only way to ensure every child, regardless of socioeconomic background, has a fair shot at success.
The former chairman argued that local governments alone cannot meet the burgeoning needs of rapidly growing communities. He called for a model of “goodwill-driven development,” where individuals and foundations complement government efforts.
Beyond physical structures, Atanda-Lawal disclosed plans to sponsor specialized teacher training programs across West Africa.
This initiative, currently awaiting approval from the State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), aims to expose local educators to regional best practices in pedagogy.
The Chairman of LASUBEB, Mr. Hakeem Shittu, lauded the move, describing it as an “uncommon gesture” among former public office holders.
He noted that while many believe politicians only take from the system, Atanda-Lawal’s return to give back to his primary school sets a new benchmark for leadership.
The Head Teacher of the school, Mrs. Elizabeth Alabi, expressed the gratitude of the staff and pupils, noting that improved classrooms are directly linked to better learning outcomes and student morale.
